How to Get Started with a Ledger Wallet
Setting up a hardware wallet involves several important steps. Take your time, follow the instructions for your specific device, and avoid rushing through security checks.
Prepare Your Device
Begin with your Ledger hardware wallet and a compatible computer or mobile device. Choose a private environment where you can complete the process without distractions. If your device appears to have been configured previously or comes with a recovery phrase already supplied, stop and consult official Ledger support before proceeding.
⚠️ Important
Never purchase a used hardware wallet or one that appears to have been previously configured. Always buy from official retailers.
Access Official Setup Resources
Open your browser and navigate directly to the official Ledger website. Follow the instructions provided for your device model and obtain the companion software only through verified official channels. Avoid download links sent through unsolicited messages, unfamiliar websites, or suspicious advertisements.
💡 Tip
Bookmark the official Ledger website URL in your browser for quick access. This prevents accidentally visiting a phishing site.
Configure Your Hardware Wallet
Follow the prompts displayed on your hardware wallet. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to create a new wallet or restore an existing wallet using your own recovery information. Choose the appropriate option and read each instruction carefully before confirming.
- Read each prompt carefully on your device's screen
- Select "Create a new wallet" if this is your first setup
- Select "Restore wallet" only if you're recovering an existing wallet
- Follow all confirmation steps exactly as shown
Create a Secure PIN
If you are initializing a new device, select a PIN according to the instructions shown on the device. Avoid predictable combinations and never share your PIN with another person. A PIN helps protect access to the physical device, but it does not replace the need to protect your recovery phrase.
🔒 Security Guidelines
- • Avoid sequential numbers (1234, 4567)
- • Don't use birthdays or anniversary dates
- • Never write down your PIN
- • Never share your PIN with anyone
Record Your Recovery Phrase
A recovery phrase can restore access to the associated wallet if the device is lost, damaged, or replaced. Record the phrase exactly as instructed during setup and store it in a secure, private location. Never photograph it, upload it to cloud storage, or enter it into an unfamiliar website.
Your recovery phrase is your backup key. Protect it like you would protect your most valuable possessions.
- Write it down on the recovery sheet provided with your device
- Store it in a secure physical location (safe, vault, etc.)
- Never share it digitally or verbally
- Test your recovery process with a small amount if possible
⛔ CRITICAL WARNING
Never disclose your recovery phrase to someone claiming to be customer support. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access your cryptocurrency. Genuine troubleshooting should never require you to reveal it to another person.
🎉 You're Set Up!
Once you've completed all five steps, your Ledger hardware wallet is ready to use. Your recovery phrase is safely stored, your PIN is set, and you can now start managing your digital assets.
